ATHENS, Greece CNN -- Authorities vowed to re-impose order after demonstrators rose up across Greece Monday in a third day of rioting over Saturday's killing of a year-old boy that has left dozens injured and scores of properties destroyed. It was unclear what would be necessary to placate the demonstrators. Police said 34 civilians and 16 police officers were injured Monday in rioting that spread into new municipalities, including Trikala, Larissam and Veria. Riots broke out Saturday in Thessaloniki and Athens, where police killed the teen. Demonstrators had torched three government buildings and three offices of the ruling conservative political party in downtown Athens , a National Fire Brigade spokesman told Greek state television.

The anti-austerity movement in Greece involves a series of demonstrations and general strikes that took place across the country. The violence broke out in the Exarchia district of the Greek capital, where year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos was shot dead on Dec. Protesters set a car alight and hurled rocks, Molotov cocktails and fireworks at lines of Greek riot police, who responded with tear gas and water cannon. Police said 35 people were detained in Athens, while three were injured, including two policemen. The clashes broke out after a peaceful march by about 1, people through central Athens. Another gathering was planned later Thursday night at the spot where Grigoropoulos died.
Demonstrations and rioting soon spread to several other cities, including Thessaloniki , the country's second-largest city. While the unrest was triggered by the shooting incident, commentators    described the reactions as expressing deeper causes as well, especially a widespread feeling of frustration in the younger generation about specific economic problems of the country partly as a result of the global economic crisis , a rising unemployment rate among the young generation and a perception of general inefficiency and corruption in Greek state institutions. On driving away in their police car, they were then confronted by another small group at a nearby street crossing. The two guards were ordered by the Greek police center of operations to disengage immediately and withdraw from the confrontation site.
