New York's governor says convicted sex offenders should be required to disclose their social media screen names to prevent them from using apps to exploit children. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday that existing laws targeting online predation don't account for new technology. His proposal, unveiled as part of his State of the State agenda, would require sex offenders to hand over screen names for dating and gaming apps, as well. The Democrat's proposed legislation would also make it a crime for convicted sex offenders to misrepresent themselves online.

By definition, a sex offender is a person who commits a crime involving a sexual act, no matter how severs it is. This being said, in both Rick Schneider's and The Economist's essays there are controversial views and opinions of whether or not sex offenders should be able to have a private life; or should their terrible crimes make it so that their lives stay open to the public more than the average person's typically would. Both authors are talking on the case where a seven year old little girl names Megan Kanka was sexually assaulted and murdered by her neighbor who was new to the area and unknown to many. The "nice" man convinced Kanka that he had a puppy to show her and to follow him inside where the fatal incident occurred. It is argued that if the community and Kanka family would have known of his status as a previous sex offender that Megan Kanka would have been strictly told and warned to stay away from her new neighbor; conversely it is debated that the family should have warned Megan Kanka of this new neighbor either way to take a precautionary towards a stranger regardless of his past. Although many offenders are not reported, those who are need to be made public so that parents can warn and protect their children and themselves from the dangers that these humans are known for and are generally distinguished to repeat.

Pursuant to Chapter 86, the Virgin Islands Department of Justice is responsible for the registration of sex offenders and for ensuring compliance with the registration requirements. In accordance with these registration requirements, the Attorney General of the Virgin is making available to the public through this website information concerning registered sexual offenders who reside, attend school or are employed in the Territory. Public access to information about registered sexual offenders is intended solely as a means of public protection. Knowing that a person in your neighborhood is a registered sexual offender could be a significant factor in protecting yourself, your family members, or persons in your care from possible harm from sex offenders who are registered or required to register in the Territory.
