The United States government has always had spies working against foreign interests, just as our enemies have used espionage against America. Declassified government documents suggest that our military should have been better prepared for the attack on Pearl Harbor. Indeed, Naval Intelligence—an espionage division of the U. Navy—had reportedly cracked Japanese military and diplomatic codes, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation FBI had observed Japanese diplomats stationed in Hawaii engaged in suspicious activities in the weeks leading up to the attack.

Those calls reached a new dramatic pitch on Wednesday when a woman scaled the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, and at least six protesters were arrested after hanging a banner calling for the abolition of Ice. Ice was created in when the Bush administration reorganized a number of federal agencies in response to the 11 September terrorist attacks, and placed them under the brand new Department of Homeland Security. Ice, which now employs over 20, people, is one of three agencies that absorbed and assumed the functions of the now defunct Immigration and Naturalization Service and the United States Customs Service.
